Abstract The introduction provides a road map to the contributions in this volume. It introduces the concept of AU law as an emergent continental legal order emanating from the activities of the African Union. It shows its place within the existing legal systems in Africa and also its importance. Furthermore, it provides an overview of the various contributions underscoring their importance and relevance. It summarizes how the contributions pull together clear and tangible evidence of the emergent AU law. It notes that the scope of the contributions is wide because the legal order created by the African Union is manifested in the many different areas that the AU and its Member States are active.
