Sangala Studio is a Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) tool developed for exploration of engineering through art. It incorporates both two-dimensional and three-dimensional design tools. Designs can be fabricated with digital die cutters, 3D printers, laser cutters and other fabrication tools. Activities in an accompanying book, Design through Making: Exploring Art and Engineering, employ Sangala Studio for a sequence of activities that move from two-dimensional art to three-dimensional design and then incorporate animated and automated mechanisms. This software was developed through a National Technology Leadership Society (NTLS) initiative involving a collaboration among the International Technology and Engineering Education Association (ITEEA), the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE), the Make to Learn Laboratory at the University of Virginia, and the Sangala Innovation Center. The Sangala Innovation Center is located in the Mt. Elgon region of east Africa. It was established by the REACH for Uganda foundation. The word Sangala means joy in the Lugisu dialect spoken in that region.
