This study explored the theme of prank content creation and its implications on Nigerian society. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research utilized content analysis, in-depth interviews, and observation. Content analysis examined the nature of online prank videos, while interviews investigated social media users’ perceptions of these videos. The study population consisted of Facebook users and prank videos uploaded on the platform. Findings revealed that certain online prank videos have adverse societal implications, including causing public uproar or health complications for victims. Conversely, many Facebook users perceived prank videos primarily as a source of entertainment, though most expressed reluctance to engage in pranking due to potential negative repercussions. Based on these findings, the study recommends the establishment of a professional regulatory body to oversee content creation in Nigeria and emphasizes the need for content creators, particularly pranksters, to be educated on media law and ethics. This approach would promote responsible content creation while safeguarding societal well-being.
