In developing countries, social networks, trust, and cooperation among smallholder farmers are crucial for adopting agricultural innovations that can improve productivity and income. Information flow and collaboration within farmer networks play a key role in overcoming barriers to adopting new practices. For example, disconnects in information and coordination prevent farmers from fully capitalizing on opportunities like selling agricultural residues to bio-waste companies. Farmer groups, particularly those in Ghana's tropical fruit regions, can help individuals build bargaining power, share resources, and spread information. Trust and cooperation within these groups, often centered around a lead farmer, facilitate innovation adoption, as farmers tend to follow the practices of respected leaders. Understanding network structures and group dynamics, including trust and power dynamics, is essential for supporting innovation and policy effectiveness in rural agricultural communities. For example, although emerging companies are increasingly engaging in the valorization of bio-waste from fruit harvesting, a disconnect remains between actors due to a lack of information and coordination. This disconnect hinders the uptake of the additional income-generating possibility of selling agricultural residues to those companies. Another example is the production of organic fertilizer primarily from pineapple waste. This fertilizer offers a two-fold benefit: farmers can dispose of their waste without the negative health-related and environmental externalities associated with burning residues in the fields, and they can generate additional income by selling the waste or reduce their fertilizer costs by using discounted organic fertilizers derived from their own waste. However, there is a risk of harvest losses if the fertilizer is not suitable for the crops, which makes risk-averse farmers hesitant to adopt new agricultural innovations. Thus, to improve residue management, innovation adoption and smallholder involvement in the bioeconomy transition, it is essential to develop an understanding of the group dynamics within smallholder farmer groups in the adoption of biotechnology. In this study, the overarching focus is to identify the what is needed to change management practices for smallholder farmers, especially in regards to selling their agricultural wastes instead of burning, as well as the adoption of new technologies like organic fertilizers produced from these agricultural wastes. Smallholder groups play a key role and are responsible for a majority of Ghana’s tropical fruits production. In our study area, the tropical fruits regions in the North and South of Ghana, farmers are typically organized into groups based on spatial proximity and type of fruit. The goal of those groups is to strengthen and increase bargaining power and to share expensive agricultural resources like machinery. Further, farmer groups play an essential role in the dissemination of information and the adoption of agricultural innovations. However, various differences within farmers groups have to be understood in order to draw conclusions for the effective targeting of policies. This includes the structure of the network, the existence of a lead farmer as well as power and trust dynamics within farmer groups that influence the behavior of individual smallholder farmers. Specifically, understanding the dynamics of trust, resource flows, and decision-making by assessing the levels of trust, cooperation, and dependence within a farmer group can provide valuable insights into effective coordination, increased resilience, and the spread of innovation. Additionally, it is common for farmer groups to have a lead farmer, a person who naturally assumes the role of a role model for other group members due to their experience, expertise, community respect, training, certification, or tradition. Farmers frequently make decisions based on the actions of the lead farmer, who thus plays a crucial role in disseminating information and facilitating the adoption of new practices and innovations.
