Somalia Education Evaluation Reports (Version 1)

This set of publications describe the external evaluation of an accelerated basic education (ABE) program in Somalia. The reports synthesize findings from a two-year external longitudinal evaluation study of the Bar ama Baro project in Somalia that examined (1) BAB effectiveness, (2) learning outcomes of diverse students in BAB Levels 1 and 2 and formal primary education in grades 1 -3, and (3) lessons learned for sustainability and scalability. The data derives from focus group discussions (74), key Informant interviews (127), student surveys and learning assessments (939), teacher surveys (49), and exit surveys with parents and caregivers of non-retained students (665) and non-retained teachers (15). The Baseline report describes evaluation framework and methodology and student and teacher data at baseline. The midline report examines student academic and SEL growth after one year, and presents findings from key informant interviews and exit surveys with parents of non-retained students. The final report examines findings and lessons learned from participants completing two years of either ABE or formal primary school, levers and barriers to student success, and implications for future educational programming and policy. Learning from this work will inform evidence-based decision making in Somalia and elsewhere.
