Strengthening Teacher Agency in Tanzania: A research-informed practice guide for school and local education leaders

This practice guide is for school and local education leaders who directly support Tanzanian secondary teachers’ daily work. It draws on insights from the Teacher Agency and Innovation in Tanzania (TAIT) research project (2024 – 2026) conducted in Lindi and Dar es Salaam. This guide was informed by insights from 410 participants in the project, including teachers, school leaders, teacher educators, and local education officers across the regions.

This resource translates key ideas from the study into practical insights for leadership, rather than presenting detailed research findings. It aims to support leaders to reflect on their own roles, understand the conditions that shape teachers’ work, and consider how their everyday decisions and practices can support teachers’ work to improve student learning.
