In Cameroon, unemployment is becoming a major concern for young graduates. According to a 2023 report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), 192 million people worldwide are unemployed, 38 million of whom are in Africa. This unemployment rate has stabilized globally after a rise in 2016. The report also indicates that the unemployment rate for young people aged 18 to 25 already exceeded 12% of the active workforce in developing countries, more than three times the unemployment rate for adults aged 27 to 35. Thus, youth unemployment continues to worsen over the years. In 2018, 172 million people were unemployed worldwide, according to the ILO, which predicted an unemployment rate of 4.9%. From 2019-2020, the unemployment rate increased to 6.5% in the employment sector due to several factors. In 2021, the unemployment rate in Cameroon stood at 6.1% of the population, compared to 3.84% in 2020. Meanwhile, the underemployment rate, initially at 75%, decreased to 65%. From 2023 to 2024, the unemployment rate fell to 5.8%, bringing the number of unemployed to 3 million (International Labour Organization, 2023).
