This repository provides the scripts used to analyse the structural and territorial dimensions of vulnerability in South African maize farming systems. The framework focuses on identifying synergies and trade-offs between sensitivity and adaptive capacity indicators across multiple forms of capital (natural, human, social, physical, and financial).

The analytical pipeline enables the detection of statistically significant relationships, structural patterns, and typological differences in vulnerability profiles at both city and cluster levels.

What this release includes

Python scripts for:

  • K-means clustering of farming systems into typologies
  • Construction of radar-based vulnerability profiles (city-level and typology-level)
  • Global and group-specific Pearson correlation analyses
  • Multiple-testing corrections (Benjamini–Hochberg FDR and Bonferroni)
  • Heatmap generation with statistical significance annotation
  • Principal Component Analysis (PCA) by city and by typology
  • Export of contingency tables for selected categorical indicators

Additional materials:

  • Refactored scripts in scripts/ ensuring reproducibility and standardized execution
  • Supporting visualization assets (heatmaps and example outputs)
  • Interview guide used in data collection
  • requirements.txt listing all Python dependencies
  • Project structure compatible with reproducing the statistical analyses and figures presented in the paper

Data availability

The data/ folder contains the structured dataset used for the analyses and precomputed correlation outputs required to reproduce the main results.

Any sensitive or confidential raw survey material is not included.
