Syntactic Analysis of Textual Metafunction of Kidawida Subordinate Clauses

Subordinate clauses play a crucial role in providing additional syntactic information. Analyzing these clauses in any language requires examining their structure and function within a sentence. While previous studies have explored various linguistic features of Kidawida word classes, a syntactic analysis of textual metafunction of Kidawida subordinate clauses remains limited which the current study focused on. The analytical tool was Systemic Functional Grammar Theory by [16]. A qualitative descriptive research design was used to collect and analyze data. The Data was collected using document analysis guide tool through the technique of text selection method on Kidawida written books. The study was carried out in Werugha public library found in Msidunyi village, Taita Sub County, Taita Taveta County. Sentences having Kidawida subordinate clauses were extracted from the five selected texts: Chughano ra Kidawida, Midedo ya Kidawida, Ndawi ra Wadawida, Taita Beginners Guide Book, and Wadawida: Writings on the Customs of Taita. A purposive sampling technique was adopted to select 30 subordinate clauses across these texts. Ten of these clauses were used for discussion. The collected data was transcribed then presented in tables and narrative form for analysis. The findings contribute to linguistic studies in the understanding of Kidawida syntax. Additionally, the study supports efforts in preserving the Kidawida language.
