Technical Report: Field Implementation and Quality Control of Mobile Health Data Collection in Kano State

Unlike one-off distribution campaigns, the ANRiN framework required long-term tracking of caregivers and children over several months. Managing this data across Karaye Local Government Area and subsequently Tofa Local Government Area meant supervisors had to keep localized field teams active despite severed seasonal logistics and heavy network limitations. Section 2: Field Architecture: The Continuous Service Delivery Model To achieve continuous delivery, the project utilized a specialized mobile application called the ANRiN App, deployed by localized Community Nutrition Volunteers who lived directly within the target settlements: Longitudinal Notification Systems: When a caregiver was initially registered in the app, the system scheduled subsequent health interventions automatically. On a monthly basis, the ANRiN App generated automated prompts showing which specific individuals were due for recurring services. Comprehensive Package Delivery: Community Nutrition Volunteers used these rolling digital prompts to conduct targeted household visits. They delivered a comprehensive care package consisting of Micronutrient Powders, Ferrous Folic Acid, Deworming Tablets, and Zinc and ORS co-packs, alongside conducting essential health and nutrition counseling for lactating mothers. Section 3: Centralized Demand Forecasting and Monthly Stock Reconciliation Because the distribution was continuous, commodity accountability followed a proactive, data-driven cycle managed between the central office, supervisors, and field volunteers: Data-Driven Provisioning: The central office monitored the main database backend to see when monthly services were coming due for specific Community Nutrition Volunteers. Based on those digital projections, the office alerted us to withdraw the exact volume of matching inventory needed for that month's rotation. Monthly Reconciliation Loops: When delivering the fresh batch of supplies to the volunteers in the field, I conducted a formal reconciliation. We sat down every month to calculate exactly what they had distributed during the previous month based on their logged app submissions versus what physical inventory they had left. This monthly audit ensured zero commodity waste and kept the digital data completely aligned with our physical inventory before new supplies were handed over. Section 4: Overcoming Seasonal and Operational Challenges The geographical realities of both Karaye and Tofa required intense field navigation, particularly during the rainy season. Despite Tofa being closer to the metropolitan center of Kano, both regions contained hard-to-reach settlements completely isolated by severe mud and flooding. Field tracking often required driving through seasonal paths where vehicles frequently became stuck, requiring community assistance to push through and complete data verification. Furthermore, as supervisor counts shifted—managing Karaye with three personnel before adjusting to just two supervisors in Tofa—we successfully optimized our supervisory routes to maintain 100 percent coverage. Section 5: Conclusion and Key Insights The 2022–2024 ANRiN deployment demonstrated that continuous, application-driven public health programs depend entirely on matching digital schedules with rigorous physical verification. By backing up automated app data with monthly stock logging and monthly human reconciliations, we kept data entries completely accurate while ensuring that life-saving nutrition reached the most isolated communities in Kano State.
