The ARS 1024:2025 Good Research Management Practice (GRMP) Standard

Africa has set a new global precedent in research governance with the launch of the world’s first Good Research Management Practice (GRMP) Standard, a transformative milestone that positions the continent as a leader in defining excellence for the global research enterprise.

The ARS 1024:2025 GRMP Standard, developed in partnership between the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation) and the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO), was officially launched on Thursday 16 October 2025, marking the beginning of a new era in how research institutions are governed, managed, and evaluated.

Good research management is critical to any organisation performing research, whether research constitutes only a relatively small portion of the organisation’s activities or whether it is the overriding reason for the organisation’s existence. The design and implementation of research management in an organisation depends upon the organisation’s needs, resources and the nature of its activities. This standard is not intended to require uniformity in the way that research management is implemented in an organisation, nor does it prescribe the research or other strategic objectives. This standard is meant to attain the objectives and benefits as specified in section 0.2).
