The Effect of Participation in Microfinance on Women's Livelihood: An Empirical Study From Tigray, Ethiopia

ABSTRACT
Microfinance has emerged as a key tool for poverty reduction and women's economic empowerment. However, little is known about the economic impact of women's participation in these institutions. This study investigates the impact of saving and credit on women's livelihood. The study was conducted in two kebelles of Atsbi‐Wonberta district, namely Habes and Barka‐Adisebha. Data was collected from 132 women (67 DECSI participants and 65 non‐participants) through structured household surveys and direct observation. Accordingly, the collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency, and percentage. A binary logistic regression model was employed to identify determinants of women's participation in microfinance services. Therefore, our findings indicate that microfinance members earned significantly higher income and owned more assets than non‐members. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers, development agencies, and microfinance providers to expand and strengthen services, improve women's access, and maximize the socio‐economic impact of microfinance in Eastern Tigray.
