The Global Participation Fund and open research infrastructure interoperability

Openness, reliability, and interoperability of research information are increasingly important to the research community. To enable it, a growing number of research infrastructures are focusing on developing interoperability and metadata reuse, in particular addressing some shared challenges like name ambiguity of researchers and transparency in disseminating research outputs. Universal uptake of ORCID is inherent in ORCID's mission However, although individual researchers in nearly every country have registered for ORCID iDs, organizational membership and national communities of practices are lacking in much of the Global South. Communities of practices are considered necessary to optimize efficiency and maintain good practices in adopting open infrastructures like ORCID. In this context, this proposal covers ORCID's Global Participation Fund (GPF), an initiative developed to remedy gaps in ORCID participation from organizations in the Global South. In these Focus Communities of the GPF, we aim to provide funds to: foster the development of ORCID Communities of Practice, working with local partners who can build understanding and use of ORCID in local contexts; and create and enhance technical integrations in open-source platforms to support the realization of the benefits provided by the use of ORCID, such as name disambiguation, trustworthy connections and metadata reuse.
