Abstract: The proliferation of fake news on social media platforms has emerged as a significantconcern impacting democratic processes worldwide, particularly during electoral periods. Thisstudy aims to investigate the effect of fake news on social media and its influence on votingpatterns during the general elections in Nigeria. Despite extensive research on fake news invarious global contexts, there is a notable gap in understanding its specific implications within theNigerian political landscape, where misinformation could disproportionately affect publicperception and behavior due to socio-economic and educational disparities. Utilizing a qualitativeresearch methodology, this study gathered data through in-depth interviews and focus groupdiscussions with a diverse array of stakeholders, including voters, political analysts, and socialmedia influencers. The findings reveal a complex interplay between misinformation and voterdecision-making, highlighting how fake news shapes public opinion, reinforces pre-existingbiases, and mobilizes certain sociopolitical narratives. Notably, the study identifies crucial gaps inmedia literacy among voters, which exacerbates the vulnerability to misinformation. Furthermore, the research underscores the role of social media algorithms in amplifying misleading content, which, in turn, skews electoral outcomes. The analysis reveals that the emotional appeal andsensationalism of fake news often overshadow factual reporting, leading to distorted perceptionsof candidates and policy issues. This study contributes to the broader discourse on electoralintegrity and democratic governance, emphasizing the urgent need for interventions that enhancemedia literacy and accountability in social media platforms. Ultimately, it calls for collaborativeefforts among stakeholders to mitigate the impact of fake news and safeguard the electoralprocess in Nigeria.
