The Importance of hygiene education among secondary school students in Nigeria.

Globally, poor sanitation and hygiene practices account for more than one million preventable deaths annually, with Nigerian secondary school students remaining among the most affected populations. Yet hygiene education continues to be critically underprioritised within the school system. This report examines the problems, effects, and solutions surrounding poor hygiene education among secondary school students in Nigeria. Evidence indicates that 70% of schools in Nigeria lack hygiene services entirely, with toilet-to-student ratios as high as 1:185 in public secondary schools, far exceeding the WHO recommended standard of 1:25. Furthermore, 73% of Nigeria's diarrhoeal and enteric disease burden is linked to poor access to water, sanitation, and hygiene, contributing directly to absenteeism and poor academic performance among students.  This report recommends a multi-stakeholder approach involving the government, NGOs, schools, teachers, and parents to improve hygiene infrastructure, incorporate hygiene education into the national school curriculum, and sustain WASH advocacy across Nigeria. Addressing this issue is not merely a health priority, it is an educational and equity imperative.
