The Internet: new challenges for information professionals in Ghana

The Internet is one development in information science that offers cheaper and better forms of restructuring internal and external networks for sharing information, knowledge and competence in a way that threatens to revolutionize a lot of businesses as well as libraries and information centres. It is first and foremost an information resource; with its rapidly expanding modes and patterns of use, it has penetrated the corporate world, has made it easier for people to communicate in real time and has re-shaped the very foundation of society. The strategic exploitation of the technology poses challenges for Ghana’s information professionals. Most libraries in Ghana lack the necessary organizational infrastructure to benefit from Internet access. Describes commercial Internet services available in Ghana and some of the public sector Internet projects being undertaken with international assistance.
