The Politics of Food Insecurity: Challenges and Implications for Adequate Food Supply in Nigeria

Nigeria has arable land and favourable climate, yet food supply remains scarce, causing shortages and insecurity. Although climate change, conflicts, and poor storage are cited as causes, this study focuses on the politics of food insecurity and its implications. Using a qualitative method based on secondary sources (textbooks, articles, reports) and thematic analysis, the findings reveal that food insecurity is artificially created through embezzlement of agricultural loans by Ministry officials, deliberate supply chain disruptions, and heavy oil dependency that undermines effective agricultural policies. This has led to malnutrition, rising prices, general insecurity, and lower labour productivity. The study suggests establishing direct links between farmers and consumers to break middlemen monopolies, and ensuring efficient distribution of ministerial funds to prevent diversion.
