The SPACE Framework: Strengthening Spaced Practice for Low-Resource Education Systems

The SPACE Framework is a structured instructional model that translates decades of cognitive science research — specifically the spacing effect, retrieval practice, and cognitive load theory — into practical classroom strategies for teachers in low-resource educational settings across Africa and the Global South. The framework defines five interlocking design principles (Spaced Retrieval, Progressive Reinforcement, Active Recall, Cognitive Consolidation, and Evidence-Based Adjustment) that can be implemented without internet access, digital devices, or specialist software. Originally developed for secondary ICT classrooms, the framework is domain-agnostic and applicable across subjects and educational levels. If you use the SPACE Framework in your research, teaching, or professional work, please cite it using the metadata below.
