The Sudan Interior Mission and ‘Arumgimis’: Expecting Christ

Abstract In 1938 the Sudan Interior Mission secured a foothold at Chali to work among the Uduk. At the time the area had just been trans ferred from the jurisdiction of Kurmuk (then Fung Province) to that of Renk in the Upper Nile Province. This opened the way for the extension of mission education to the Uduk and some of their neighbours like the Komo, as a’ part of ‘Southern’ policy. The Sudan Government from the early years of the century had favoured missions in the South which placed emphasis upon practical edu cation, upon agricultural and industrial teaching and sound basic skills of literacy, rather than missions which concentrated almost exclusive efforts upon religious enlightenment and conversion.
