Part 5: Digital Resilience in Adversity International audience Cities are the drivers of innovation, growth, and change, and are rapidly expanding, especially in Africa. Cape Town is one of those cities, with high urbanization rates and persisting crime levels. There is a need to design ‘smart’ ways of growth which includes facilitating a safe and secure city for citizens. This study focuses on smart city initiatives in Cape Town, placing citizens at the center of the development process. Crowdsourcing techniques are utilized to develop a smart mobile application prototype that focuses on enhancing community engagement, resilience and increased perceived feelings of safety and security for citizens. The study uses a Design Science Research method with Cape Town citizens as the main stakeholders, to propose an artifact based on their wishes and needs with regards to safety and security in the city.
