The Use of Artificial Intelligence for Library and Information Services in Federal Polytechnic Libraries North-east, Nigeria

The study investigates the use of artificial intelligence for library and information services in federal polytechnic libraries, Northeast, Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to: identify the current uses of AI in providing library services, examine the roles of AI in enhancing user information services, assess applications of AI in research support and services, identify the challenges affecting the use of AI and explore strategies for effective AI integration into library service delivery. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study. This study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprises 120 library staff. The study employed a census sampling technique. Data was collected using structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics of mean standard deviation was used as a method of data analysis. The findings revealed that AI applications are low, findings shows the application of AI includes: supporting academic research, the study revealed that the challenges of using AI include: financial constraints and inadequate infrastructure, and the study shows that the strategies to improve AI applications are: building staff capacity through training and collaboration. The study conclude that the use of Artificial Intelligence for library and information services remains low, and the role of AI is recognized in enhancing access to library resources, providing AI-driven reference services. The study recommends among others that Federal polytechnic libraries should prioritize the gradual integration of AI by starting with affordable, open-source AI tools to increase adoption and demonstrate value before moving to advanced systems
