Theatre for Development: A Tool for Promoting Peace building and Unity – A Case Study of the Play ‘‘Bunaa Hadha Danuu’’ in Jimma, Ethiopia

Abstract This study examines how Theatre for Development (TfD) promotes peace and unity through the play Bunaa Hadha Danuu, performed for the Jimma community. The general objective of the study is to explore how TfD can be used as a tool for peacebuilding, conflict resolution and community cohesion. The research is motivated by the need to demonstrate the social and cultural significance of participatory theatre in addressing community challenges, strengthening social bonds and preserving indigenous Oromo cultural practices. A qualitative research methodology is employed, combining participant observation during performances, in-depth interviews with audience members, performers and community leaders, and focus group discussions. The collected data are analyzed thematically and interpretively to identify patterns in audience engagement, social learning and behavioral changes prompted by the performance. The key findings reveal that Bunaa Hadha Danuu effectively educates the audience on practical strategies for conflict resolution, peaceful interaction and collective problem-solving. The performance strengthens community identity by integrating Oromo storytelling, cultural symbols, songs, dances and participatory techniques, making it both educational and culturally enriching. The study highlights that Theatre for Development empowers communities to reflect on personal and communal responsibilities, encourages dialogue and fosters unity and social cohesion. Based on these findings, the study recommends promoting and supporting community-based theatre initiatives as effective tools for peacebuilding, cultural preservation and civic engagement. It suggests that similar theatre interventions can be implemented in other communities in Ethiopia and beyond to strengthen unity, nurture indigenous culture and address social challenges through participatory and culturally grounded performance.
