Tone and Intonation

The objective of this study is to identify the basic components of pitch that can be isolated from tone and attributed to intonation, and establish them as the elements that must be accounted for in the transcription of an oral corpus in order to make it useful for typological studies of intonation. To address this problem, this study leans heavily on Zaar, a Chadic tone language spoken in the South of Bauchi State, Nigeria. L'objet de cette étude est d'identifier les composantes de l'intonation qui sont indépendantes du ton, et les établir comme les éléments qui doivent être notés dans la transcription des corpus oraux afin de les rendre accessibles aux études typologiques sur l'intonation. Pour traiter ce problème, on s'est appuyé sur le zaar, langue tonale tchadique parlée au sud de l'état de Bauchi au Nigéria
