This study explores the relevance of traditional Nigerian textile techniques, such as adire, aso-oke, and akwete, in the context of contemporary eco-fashion, addressing the research gap in linking Indigenous artisanship with sustainable fashion practices in Africa. While much of the global literature acknowledges the aesthetic and cultural value of traditional textiles, there is limited empirical investigation into their practical contributions to environmentally responsible fashion systems, particularly within Nigeria. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and visual documentation with six master artisans, six eco-conscious fashion designers, and six local textile cooperatives. Thematic analysis revealed that traditional textile practices align closely with core principles of eco-fashion, such as low-carbon production, use of natural dyes, and cultural sustainability. However, findings also highlight challenges, including generational knowledge loss, economic marginalisation of artisans, limited natural resources, and low scalability caused by the lack of modern technology, and fast-paced demands for new products. Eco-conscious designers indicated integrating traditional Nigerian textiles for their sustainable benefits and as a brand strategy.
