The NWU PQM currently stands as the second-largest Postgraduate Qualification Management system in South Africa. However, it is worth noting that the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has raised concerns regarding its size. Consequently, there is an imperative to embark on a process aimed at downsizing the PQM. Such an endeavour not only seeks to streamline resource allocation within NWU but also lays the foundational framework for the future PQM at NWU. The envisioned future PQM is envisioned to be internationally competitive, highly responsive, and aligned with contemporary global issues, including but not limited to climate change, international sustainability, sustainable development, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. In light of the escalating unemployment rates in South Africa, especially among degree holders, it becomes imperative to reflect upon the relevance and effectiveness of the current degree programs in enhancing graduates' employability and work readiness. Consequently, a comprehensive reevaluation of the PQM across various faculties is warranted, with a view to aligning the curriculum more closely with the demands of the job market. This realignment should also focus on the cultivation of specific graduate attributes and facilitating seamless progression to postgraduate studies. Furthermore, it is crucial to ensure that the curricula remain responsive to the imperatives of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) given the ongoing technological advancements. The primary objectives of the PQM review encompass the reduction of the number of programs and modules, the elimination of program overlaps, alleviation of programs characterized by credit overloads, and the enhancement of program relevance and responsiveness. Ultimately, the overarching goal is to establish a consistent and coherent architectural framework for bachelor's degree programs at NWU, thus ensuring the long-term sustainability and adaptability of the institution in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape.
