URBAN GREEN SPACE IN KATSINA CITY, NIGERIA: LAND USE CHANGES AND PERCEPTIONS

Rapid urbanization in Nigerian cities has intensified pressure on urban green infrastructure, yet few studies integrate geospatial analysis with stakeholder perceptions. This study assessed the magnitude and spatial patterns of green space loss in Katsina City and examined how socio-demographic factors influence residents’ awareness and perceptions of urban green spaces. Specifically, we analyzed land use changes between 1990 and 2020, mapped the spatial distribution of green spaces, and explored stakeholder perceptions to support sustainable urban planning. A mixed-method approach was employed, integrating geospatial analysis with socio-demographic surveys. Satellite imagery from 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 was analyzed using GIS, Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) classification, and change detection techniques. A structured questionnaire was administered to 203 residents, with 199 valid responses used for analysis. Results revealed substantial urban expansion and green space decline. Vegetation cover decreased from 10.6% in 1990 to 2.8% in 2020, while built-up area increased from 4.6% to 38.9%. The most significant changes occurred between 2010 and 2020, when vegetation declined by over 70% and built-up land expanded markedly. Green spaces were unevenly distributed, with higher concentrations in the urban core and lower concentrations in outer urban fringe and newly developing residential communities. Occupation significantly influenced residents’ perceptions (p = 0.023), whereas gender differences were not significant. Younger (18 – 25 years) and more educated (Phd level) respondents demonstrated greater awareness of green space benefits. These findings highlight the need for protection of existing vegetation, and equitable integration of green infrastructure into future urban development in Katsina City.​
