Validation of the Weeding of Information Resources in Academic Libraries Questionnaire (WIRALQ): A Psychometric Analysis

Reliable and valid measurement instruments are essential for advancing research on weeding practices in academic libraries. This article reports the development and psychometric validation of the Weeding of Information Resources in Academic Libraries Questionnaire (WIRALQ), a structured instrument designed to assess types of resources weeded, weeding criteria, frequency, challenges, and policy existence. The WIRALQ was developed based on a review of the literature (2015-2025), the MUSTIE/CREW frameworks, and the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Content and face validity were established by three LIS experts. The questionnaire was then piloted with 12 library staff at the Federal University of Kashere Library in Gombe State, Nigeria. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.87 for the Likert‑scale sections. Test‑retest reliability (two‑week interval) produced a Pearson correlation of r = 0.84. Inter‑rater agreement for the documentary checklist was 90%. The WIRALQ is a valid and reliable instrument suitable for comparative studies of weeding practices in academic libraries, particularly in developing country contexts.
