Subset of de-identified Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) data for newborns who died in Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Contains information on place of birth, place of death, and care-seeking for newborn's fatal illness. VASA data for Malawi and Tanzania was collected using Child Health Epidemiology and Reference Group (CHERG) Stillborn, Neonatal, and Child VASA questionnaires from 2013 and 2017/18, respectively. VASA data for Mozambique was collected through Country Mortality Surveillance for Action (COMSA), a collaboration between the Mozambique government and Institute of International Programs at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to implement a sample registration system of births and deaths. VASA data for Mozambique and Tanzania are nationally representative, whereas data for Malawi was collected in two districts – Balaka and Salima – located in the South and Central regions of Malawi and are representative of those two districts. VASA de-identified data and questionnaires were accessed with permission from the primary research team at Johns Hopkins University. Additional information on datasets can be found in publication by the primary research teams.
