Woman marriages have been recorded for over forty societies in Africa. They were contracted either because wealthy or powerful women wanted to establish a compound of their own or because they wanted to get children on behalf of a (deceased) male. Other forms of institutionalized women's same‐sex relationships include bond friendships.
