Reduplication is a pervasive morphological device cross-linguistically, and it often encodes meanings beyond the core lexical content of the base. Building on I. I. Melchuk’s typology of word-building meanings conveyed via reduplication (intensity, repetition, every, all, complete, only, attenuative, similarity, diminutiveness, distributiveness, pejorative / indifference / neglect, use due to determination, language of a people, inhabitant of a territory), this study argues that Melchuk’s list, while valuable, is not exhaustive. Through comparative data spanning Turkic, Southeast Asian, Austronesian, Afro-Asiatic, and other language families, we propose an extended typology of reduplicative semantics. In particular, we identify and illustrate additional categories including laudativeness (praise, admiration), frequentativeness (habitual or occasional repetition), “human behavior” (verbs and adjectives describing anthropomorphic or behavioral features), and movement of body parts. The empirical discussion draws on Azerbaijani, Tatar, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Khmer, Wolof, Arabic, Malagasy, French, and other languages to show how both full and partial reduplication, as well as affixal or root reduplication, contribute to nuanced semantic modulation. The proposed typology refines our understanding of how morphology interfaces with modality, evaluative meaning, and discourse pragmatics, and suggests that dictionary treatments of reduplicated forms should systematically annotate their semantic variants. This expanded classification aims to open new directions for typological, etymological, and cognitive investigations of reduplication.
