World Hausa Day 2026: Celebrating Our Language, Heritage, and Future

World Hausa Day is observed annually on August 26. It was introduced in 2015 by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari as a social media initiative to promote the use of the Hausa language online and raise awareness of its cultural significance. Jari's original vision was simple yet impactful: encourage Hausa speakers to use the language on social media, share proverbs, create new Hausa words for modern concepts, and post photos of Hausa traditions and culture. What began as a grassroots digital campaign has since transformed into an international cultural movement celebrated across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.
