English Abstract The main objective of this study is to analyze the representation of the human and natural in the novel Arraa Gurbaa! To achieve this, a qualitative textual analysis was conducted, critically examining purposively selected extracts from the primary source. The study employed qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. Drawing on a poststructuralist perspective, the study investigates how the text destabilizes traditional boundaries. The findings reveal that the novel anthropomorphizes animals, depicting them with traits of resistance, heroism, and unity, which initially sets up binary polarities (positive vs. negative relationships) among different animal groups. Conversely, while these animals exhibit heroic qualities, the protagonist’s family is portrayed as lacking groups. and unity. Meanwhile, the antagonist's family undergoes a form of zoomorphism, adopting predatory, animal-like characteristics to harm others. By contrasting this anthropomorphism (animals taking on human traits) with zoomorphism (humans taking on animal traits), the novel deconstructs and inverts the traditional human/animal binary opposition into an animal/human dynamic. Furthermore, while the text initially presents one group of animals as dominant and another as subordinate, it ultimately disrupts this hierarchy by centering the care and agency of the marginalized animals. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the foundational anthropocentrism of Western culture, which views human and animal domains as rigidly separate, is highly fluid and changeable within the Oromo worldview, ultimately rendering the boundaries between human and animal deeply controversial.
