Zaar oral tradition and culture

This archive records interviews of Zaar elders concerning Zaar oral tradition and customs in 62 audio cassettes transcribed and translated into English by Emmanuel Ali in 63 notebooks. Audio files are in AUDIO_CorpusFrankfurt67_ZAAR, notebooks are in annotations_Zaar. It was collected in Bauchi State, Nigeria, by Emmanuel Ali in 1991-1992 under the supervision of Dr Rudolf Leger and Prof. Herrmann Jungraithmayr as part of their research project on Sprach- und Kulturgeschichte im Raum zwischen dem Gongola-Becken, Benue und Plateau.[1] It was donated by Dr Leger and Prof. Jungraithmayr to B. Caron for him to edit in 2012. Unfortunately, the poor quality of the audio recordings, and the idiosyncratic transcriptions done by Emmanuel Ali have made the documents virtually impossible to exploit. However, it has been decided to digitalise the documents for preservation, and make them available as a resource for the Zaar community.
