The entry gives a critical review of scholarship on Zambian English, which differs from its British English input. Examples of Zambian English tend to be stereotypical, isolated words, phrases and sentences extracted for their peculiarity to assumed standardised British English norms. The entry considers the question of competence, functions, use and policy towards English and it is argued that the studies do not consider formal and informal English use, and the linguistic stylisation of identities and statuses in Zambia's multilingual contexts. It is also argued that the Zambian English scholarship tends to be ahistorical by characterising the language as an interlanguage constituted by “deviant” forms of standardised British English. The entry concludes that a more comprehensive account of Zambian English has to account for how Zambians use forms of English and indigenous languages in various styles in multilingual contexts.
