55 From Shortage to Surplus: Evaluating Innovative Blood Donation Recruitment Strategies in Upper Egypt

Abstract Introduction/Objective Blood shortages are a global concern, affecting healthcare systems and patient outcomes worldwide. In Egypt, the demand for blood products has consistently outpaced supply, leading to critical shortages that jeopardize patient care and surgical outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a targeted donor recruitment initiative implemented in 2024, designed to enhance blood donation rates and improve the availability of blood products in Upper Egypt. Methods/Case Report The recruitment initiative employed a multifaceted approach, including community outreach programs, social media campaigns, and partnerships with local organizations. These strategies aimed to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and engage potential donors from diverse demographics. Educational workshops and events were organized to dispel myths surrounding blood donation and encourage participation. Data were collected on the total units of blood donated before and after the initiative, comparing the number of units collected in 2024. Results Prior to the initiative, 1,845 units of blood were collected. Following the implementation of the recruitment strategies, this number increased significantly to 3,475 units, representing an impressive 88.5% increase in blood donations. This remarkable improvement in blood donation rates demonstrates the effectiveness of the recruitment initiative and highlights the potential of innovative strategies in addressing blood shortages. Conclusion The findings of this study underscore the success of strategic donor engagement in mobilizing potential donors and fostering a culture of giving. The significant increase in blood donations not only alleviates shortages but also enhances community awareness and involvement in health-related initiatives. Future studies should explore the long-term sustainability of these strategies, their impact on donor retention, and their applicability in diverse demographic settings across Egypt. By continuing to refine and implement effective recruitment strategies, we can ensure a stable and sufficient blood supply, ultimately improving patient outcomes and healthcare delivery in the region.
