African venture capital (VC) ecosystems are characterized by high-growth potential, evolving regulatory landscapes, and elevated levels of market volatility. These unique dynamics present both opportunities and significant strategic risks to investors. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for strategic risk management in African venture capital by integrating market volatility assessments with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven data analysis. The framework aims to enhance decision-making, optimize portfolio management, and improve resilience in the face of economic uncertainty. Traditional risk management tools often fall short in capturing the real-time fluctuations and socio-political complexities of African markets. By leveraging machine learning algorithms, predictive analytics, and real-time macroeconomic indicators, this framework allows venture capitalists to proactively identify emerging risks, adjust investment strategies, and detect early signals of underperformance. The proposed framework incorporates four core components: data ingestion from diverse financial and non-financial sources, AI-enabled risk modeling, strategic scenario planning, and continuous risk feedback mechanisms. These components are designed to function within local market contexts, recognizing the limitations of data availability and regulatory inconsistencies. Case examples from Nigeria, Kenya, and Egypt highlight how AI-driven insights into currency risk, inflation, regulatory shifts, and geopolitical events can significantly enhance capital allocation strategies and improve startup success rates.Furthermore, the framework supports ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) integration and enhances due diligence by identifying patterns in founder behavior, operational risk, and market entry timing. By enabling more granular and adaptive risk forecasting, it aligns with the broader goals of sustainable economic development and financial inclusion in Africa. This study contributes to the growing discourse on digital transformation in investment management and provides a roadmap for incorporating AI technologies into risk governance practices in emerging VC markets. The model offers practical relevance for fund managers, policymakers, fintech innovators, and institutional investors seeking to scale their impact while navigating uncertainty.
