Maidens Pool Rock Shelter contains archaeological deposits and rock art that document human occupation and symbolic expression in southern Africa. The site includes painted and engraved imagery depicting animals and abstract forms, interpreted as part of ritual or communicative practices. Excavated materials such as stone tools and faunal remains contribute to understanding subsistence strategies and environmental interactions.Maidens Pool Rock Shelter is part of the listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, 'The Emergence of Modern Human Behaviour: The Pleistocene Occupation Sites of South Africa'.The Zamani Project seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of tangible cultural heritage in Africa and internationally by creating metrically accurate digital representations of historical sites. Digital spatial data of cultural heritage sites can be used for research and education, for restoration and conservation, and as a record for future generations.
