A Lexico-Semantic Analysis of Ghana's 68th Independence Day Speech by President John Dramani Mahama

This qualitative study explored the sense relations of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day Speech by President John Dramani Mahama. The objective is to examine the stored meanings in the lexical relations – synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, hypernymy among others identified in the speech. Hinged on Wittgenstein’s (2009) Use of Meaning theory and content analytical design, the study unravelled the existence of paradigmatic and syntagmatic sense relations. The study employed the purposive sampling technique and the most recent Independence Day Speech was selected and downloaded from the WhatsApp page of Hohoe Municipal Assembly. The findings uncovered evidence of synonymy, antonymy (including gradable, complementary, relational, and reversive types), hyponymy/hypernymy, collocations, and phrasal/prepositional verbs. This exposure has contributed to the available literature by showcasing how President Mahama effectively deployed these lexical relations to recognize Ghana’s struggles and aspirations while calling on all and sundry to embrace the reset agenda of his government.
