A Quantitative Framework for Structured Symbolic Systems in the Middle Stone Age: Evidence for Regional Organization and Temporal Evolution in Early Homo sapiens Symbolic Behavior (~100,000–55,000 Years Ago), Southern Africa

This paper introduces the first quantitative structural analysis of Middle Stone Age engraved symbolic artifacts from Southern Africa, applying the Formulametrics MM-X framework (FMX-2026) to 35 artifacts across four sites spanning approximately 100,000 to 55,000 years ago — among the oldest intentional symbolic objects produced by Homo sapiens.

The study demonstrates for the first time that the Blombos Cave and Diepkloof Rock Shelter engraving tradition is statistically non-random, temporally organized, and structurally constrained, consistent with a constrained symbolic system rather than unstructured decoration. Key results include a highly significant temporal organization of motif types across stratigraphic layers (χ²=89.9, p<0.001, odds ratio=54×), a new geometric identification of a two-register centripetal structure in the flagship Blombos piece SAM-AA 8938 (~77,000 years old), and a first quantitative measure of Phase Mutual Information (1.677 bits) confirming the tradition is time-organized.

The analysis further identifies a moderate geographic signal (site-level r=0.64) consistent with a regionally bounded symbolic system across a ~1,500km Southern African coastal arc, and preliminary evidence that the signal breaks down when expanded to North African and Levantine assemblages — indicating multiple distinct symbolic systems coexisted during the Middle Stone Age.

This work does not attempt to decipher semantic content. The contribution is structural classification: establishing that the oldest known human symbolic tradition operated with measurable, non-random grammar — 77,000 years before the invention of writing.
