This project aims to address the digital divide in South Africa by exploring the potential of shared data networks to enhance internet accessibility. Despite the rapid advancements in information and communication technology (ICT), a significant portion of the population, particularly in developing countries like South Africa, remains disconnected due to a lack of access to necessary devices and affordable internet services. This research undertakes a comprehensive literature review to identify prevailing trends and gaps, informing the implementation of shared data networks to improve connectivity. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of ICT for Development (ICT4D), Distributed Systems Theory (DST), and Network Theory (NT), the study investigates the technical feasibility and social impact of these networks. ICT4D emphasizes the role of technology in fostering socioeconomic development, while DST and NT provide insights into the collaborative and interconnected nature of shared data networks. Key concepts such as internet accessibility, affordability, and shared data networks are critically examined. The study highlights the current state of internet access in South Africa, underscoring challenges like high costs and inadequate infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. Shared data networks emerge as a viable solution, offering decentralized, community-driven internet sharing that can bridge these gaps.
