Lecture timetable generation is a complex constraint-satisfaction problem that directly impacts staff workload, room utilization, and student experience in higher education institutions. In the Nigerian context, challenges such as large student populations, power instability, and limited bandwidth further complicate deployment of scheduling systems. This paper reviews existing toolkits for lecture timetable management, categorizing them into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) modules, dedicated commercial software, open-source solvers, and lightweight Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platforms. Each category is evaluated against criteria including algorithmic capability, dual-stakeholder usability for staff and students, integration, cost, and suitability for low-resource environments. Case studies from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), and Federal Polytechnic Nekede illustrate adoption patterns in Nigeria. Findings indicate that while commercial systems provide superior user experience, open-source tools such as FET and UniTime offer the strongest algorithmic control for complex institutions. We conclude with a decision matrix and identify gaps, including poor WhatsApp integration and limited mobile-first design for staff.
