Access to specialist healthcare services is one of the major challenges to the attainment of the global sustainable development goal 3 of good health and wellbeing for all by 2030. Telemedicine enables patients in low-resource, rural and remote communities to access specialist diagnosis over the Internet, mitigating the physical distance challenge to healthcare delivery. Hyperspectral imaging is a unique imaging modality that is currently in use to aid specialist diagnosis of skin conditions in dermatology. There is currently no study on the implementation of this imaging modality as a Telemedicine application. Thus, in this study we propose a prototype hyperspectral imaging-based Telemedicine system. We performed simulations of the transmission of multiple hyperspectral imaging data over the proposed architecture using selected 5G, 4G LTE, and 3G networks. The recorded results of performance parameters show that HSI is a viable use case in Telemedicine.
