Acoustic signals generated during flight by different geographical types of honeybees (Apismellifera) were collected and analyzed to determine the feasibility of an acoustic based method for type identification. Flight sounds were collected in the United States for European origin honeybees common to North America and at locations in Venezuela and Mexico for both the European types and the African origin types which have spread throughout South and Central America during the last three decades. Equipment and data collection procedures were developed so that individual honeybees providing the acoustic signals could be collected for subsequent identification by the reference morphometric method used by the USDA. The acoustic signals were analyzed and significant characteristics were identified. These characteristics combined with the morphometric identifications provided an identification algorithm: European origin honeybees have wingbeat frequencies generally less than 250 Hz; African origin honeybees have frequencies more than 250 Hz. This work was motivated by the need for a simple, nonintrusive, and inexpensive field survey method for identifying honeybees suspected of being Africanized. An electronic device called ‘‘Buzz Buster’’ is now being marketed.
