The Ịjọ people of Nigeria's Niger Delta have developed a distinctive riverine architecture through centuries of adaptation to dynamic coastal environments. Although this architectural tradition demonstrates considerable adaptive sophistication, it has received limited scholarly attention, reflecting the broader colonial devaluation of African Indigenous knowledge systems within scholarship, planning, and policy. This paper investigates the adaptive principles embedded in Indigenous Ịjọ architecture and evaluates their relevance to settlement resilience in dynamic coastal environments. Guided by the Sankofa principle and an Afrocentric framework as its methodological and epistemological orientations, the study adopts a qualitative typological analysis of vernacular built forms across three Ịjọ riverine settlements. Data were obtained through field observation and photographic documentation in Nembe–Ogbolomabiri and Kinkiamabugo, and from published archival documentation on Ekperiyaigbene Base Camp. Analysis of these data identified three recurring adaptive logics, which were examined for their contributions to settlement resilience and environmental adaptation under unstable coastal conditions. Interpreted through resilience theory, the findings demonstrate the systemic coherence of these Indigenous adaptive strategies and show that they embody principles consistent with what is now formalised as Nature-Based Solutions, predating their contemporary articulation in coastal design and policy discourse. The study concludes that these principles provide valuable insights for designing resilient coastal architecture, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions of sub-Saharan Africa.
