The African Genomic Medicine Training Initiative (AGMT) was launched in May 2016, in Senegal, by a group of stakeholders from the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) Consortium and the African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG) has developed competencies in genomic medicine with the aim to provide genomics and genetics education to healthcare professionals based in Africa. The first set of competencies that the initiative developed were for Nurses. These were used to develop curriculum and to provide genomics and genetics education for Nurses in Africa. The competencies were also published in The African Genomic Medicin… article.

However, due to the demand for Genomic Medicine training from Medical Doctors, Pathologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians and considering that these groups are also likely to have an impact on Genomic Medicine, personas from these groups were identified, added and used to create and map competencies of these additional groups. Consequently, resulting in the development of the curriculum and provision of genomics and genetics education for Medical Doctors, Pathologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians in Africa.
