This systematic review aims to synthesize philosophical and interdisciplinary literature on African relational ontologies and their implications for environmental ethics. The review is motivated by the argument that the contemporary ecological crisis is fundamentally rooted in metaphysical assumptions, particularly anthropocentrism and human-nature dualism that characterize dominant Western philosophical traditions. It also leans into arguments by some critics that indigenous African environmental ethics are anthropocentric. By extracting its non-anthropocentric and relational elements like ontological interconnectedness and vital force from decades of research, this study seeks to justify African environmental ethics positing as an alternative metaphysical foundation for environmental ethics.
