It introduces a pilot project conducted in Zanzibar, Tanzania, exploring the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into traditional geography education. As Africa confronts challenges in educational resources and teacher shortages, innovative technologies like AI—the convergence of AI and Geographic Information Science (GIS)—offer a transformative solution. This project aimed to develop and implement an AI-powered teaching module to supplement the existing geography curriculum for secondary school students. This paper outlines the methodology, including the development of localized AI tools and the training of teachers and students. While the full results are forthcoming, initial observations suggest that integrating AI significantly enhances student engagement, improves spatial thinking skills, and provides teachers with powerful new tools for instruction. The discussion addresses the opportunities and challenges of scaling such initiatives across the African continent, emphasizing the potential for AI to bridge educational gaps and prepare the next generation for a data-driven world.
