AI Integration Trends: Exploring Southern Africa Libraries

A bibliometric analysis of scholarly publications was conducted from the Scopus and Web of Science databases to get a general view of the adoption of AI in Southern African libraries. This analysis aimed to reveal emerging trends, patterns, and complexities currently shaping this field while also addressing gaps and inconsistencies in the literature.The results reveal that, in Southern Africa, adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic libraries is becoming a game changer. It is starting to reshape how these libraries operate and serve their communities, driven by the need to enhance service delivery and meet the evolving demands of the digital age.A key transformation is the enhanced availability of library services through AI-powered systems that offer 24/7 access to resources. Natural Language Processing (NLP) enables voice-based information retrieval on online platforms, while AI-driven recommendation systems improve resource discovery. Furthermore, AI automates repetitive tasks such as cataloguing and indexing, which reduces the workload for librarians and allows them to focus on more complex duties. Robotic and cobotic machines are also being deployed for shelving and inventory management tasks. These technologies optimise library operations and improve efficiency while creating a symbiotic human-machine relationship.The use of AI in academic libraries also includes the deployment of AI-driven chatbots like ChatGPT to provide immediate responses to user queries. At the same time, intelligent robots such as "Libby" offer personalised support to library patrons. These AI systems also improve data collection and analysis, enabling a better understanding of user behaviour and resource utilisation. Despite the potential benefits, challenges exist, including financial constraints, the need for robust ICT infrastructure, and the necessity for training librarians to effectively use AI technologies. These challenges need to be addressed to fully realise the potential of AI in academic libraries in Southern Africa and ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible and ethical, particularly in the context of developing countries.
