An analysis of english and nafara proverbs: a pragmatic perspective

This work shows English and Nafara proverbs in a real-world of communication as a discourse strategy. Nafara language belongs to Gur languages precisely Senufo, and English is a Germanic language. The two speeches communities are very far away and their living conditions are very different. A speaker uses proverbs for warning, giving a piece of advice and persuading a hearer. This way of speaking indirectly to reach an expectation is a discourse strategy. On the contrary, the speaker can use the ordinary language instead of metaphorical language. Moreover, this study focuses on language and culture to underline sameness and discrepancies between English and Nafara proverbs. Some similarities in terms of the language properties, syntactic structure of proverbs and meaning can be found.The traditional community currently uses proverbs to back up claims. Whereas, proverbs use is an old-dated fact for the modern community. Culture is the core element which sheds light on the gap between the idiosyncratic aspects of the two communities and the folk taxonomy.
