An Examination of the Kente Industry in Ghana: A SWOT Analysis Perspective

Purpose: This paper's objective is to present a thorough SWOT analysis of Ghana's Kente industry in order to create a framework that will improve the industry's value addition, market accessibility, and sustainability. Ghana’s Kente industry represents one of the most symbolically powerful and globally recognised indigenous textile traditions in Africa. Despite its economic relevance and cultural prestige, the industry faces structural, technological and competitive pressures that threaten its long-term sustainability. This study provides a strategic assessment of the Ghanaian Kente industry using a structured Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analytical framework. Methodology/Design: An empirical quantitative study was adopted to examine the SWOT analysis of the Kente industry. A stratified random sample technique was employed to select 150 weavers and kente traders for the study, adopting a Google Form survey. Findings: Kente business is a valuable cultural and commercial resource that is in great demand both domestically and internationally. Government backing and a strong cultural legacy are among its advantages. On the other hand, weaknesses include counterfeit goods and restricted financial access. The industry can use digital platforms and e-commerce to expand. Sustainable production processes and creative weaving techniques are part of a successful framework. For the industry to be viable in the long run, cooperation and research and development spending are essential. The industry can guarantee its worldwide recognition and economic contribution by promoting Kente craftsmanship and conserving its history. Practical and Social Implications: There are several ramifications for Ghana's Kente industry's expansion. In terms of the economy, it gives weavers and craftspeople employment and revenue prospects. In terms of culture, it maintains Ghanaian heritage and traditional craftsmanship. Socially, it fosters cultural identity and strengthens local communities. By using digital platforms, the sector may reach a worldwide audience, promoting sustainable practices and introducing the world to Ghanaian culture. Originality: This paper provides a comprehensive knowledge of Kente industries in Ghana, advancing existing knowledge and paving the way for long-term viability and global recognition.
